Marben writes on IMS testing in European Communications
March 2010
IMS open standards are a tremendous opportunity for carriers to leverage multivendor market offers to reduce costs for building their IMS network and getting a richer services portfolio. However, the resulting heterogeneity and the open modular architecture of IMS results in a complexity which needs to be carefully addressed all along the implementation of IMS. Testing as it is the last step to validate products or whole networks is then a key challenge in the successful roll out of IMS networks and delivery of multimedia services.
Marben Products released its HSS Emulator to help carriers and equipment vendors to answer this testing challenge. Aimed at being used at the early stage of development by equipment manufacturers, as well as in the latest stages of deployment at carriers, HSS Emulator is a tool designed to reduce development and deployment of IMS services and networks. Lightweight and easy to use, it secures your development and deployment by enabling you to set up an IMS testing infra-structure for a small investment and operation cost.
Read more on how emulator tools like HSS Emulator can help overcome the IMS testing complexity in European Communications.

Marben Products at MPLS2008: Isocore Interop testing
October 23, 2008
For the first time in Fall 2008, GMPLS controlled Ethernet Label Switching has been introduced in the LEC interoperability testing. Ethernet has been dominant in the enterprise and data network for a long time. Wide-scale MAN and WAN deployments is made possible with the Provider Backbone Bridge (PBB) and the new IEEE 802.1Qay Provider Backbone Bridge - Traffic Engineering (PBB-TE) amendments of the Ethernet bridging standard. Operators are considering the use of PBB-TE connection oriented Ethernet in access and aggregation networks. It seems a natural step to use GMPLS to provision and reconfigure PBB-TE connections in Ethernet networks.
Marben Products once again successfully participated in the Isocore interop testing around next generation Carrier Grade Ethernet. This event took place in the Isocore Lab October 23, 2008 in front of major equipment vendors.
Marben Products successfully created LSPs through different network elements. All combinations of initiating and terminating nodes were used to successfully create bidirectional LSPs. The new Ethernet Traffic Parameter SENDER_TSPEC object was used to specify distinct bandwidth requirements for multiple CoS and OAM parameters were signalled in LSP_ATTRIBUTES object of some of the PATH messages. Full path rerouting was even demonstrated by simulating data plane failure on the egress node.

Mobile Internet Services and the UMTS Challenge
The convergence of wireless and Internet technologies and their widespread use have driven a major surge in demand for telecom services. The introduction of UMTS as the third-generation mobile phone standard is therefore expected to revolutionize the delivery of multimedia services and applications.
UMTS should facilitate wireless Internet access and avoid overloading the capacity of mobile phone networks, while providing enhanced technical performance. Based on Internet-compatible technologies, the new UMTS networks will enable high data transmission rates of up to 2 MB/s with full multimedia capability and will radically transform the internal structure of mobile communication networks and terminals.
Abbreviations
- ASN.1
- Abstract Syntax Notation One (ASN.1) is a language that describes data structures to enable communication among heterogeneous systems. It is widely used in telecommunications for billing, network management, voice over IP, secure transactions and other functions. In UMTS networks, ASN.1 is used to encode exchanged messages. An encoding/decoding system is therefore implemented on each terminal and network infrastructure (RNC, Node B, Core Network), which requires ASN.1 products to meet specific performance and memory allocation specifications of each type of equipment concerned.
- BSC
- A Base Station Controller. A BSC is a switching unit that acts as an interface between the network and the BTSs it controls.
- BTS
- A Base Transceiver Station. A BTS is used for transmission and reception in a GSM mobile phone system.
- NodeB
- The equivalent of a BTS in UMTS technology.
- OMC
- An Operation and Maintenance Center. An OMC is used to manage GSM network elements.
- RNC
- A Radio Network Controller. An RNC is the UMTS equivalent of a BSC.
- UMTS
- Universal Mobile Transmission System.
