The ASN.1 standard (Abstract Syntax Notation One) defines a notation to describe exchanged data and a set of encoding rules to transmit this data over networks. The ASN.1 Format is widely used in telecommunications, for example in GSM, UMTS and LTE networks, and more and more in other areas, where efficient data communication is required such as RFID (Radio Frequency Identification), intelligent transportation, banking.
Existing encoding rules defined by the ASN.1 Format are Basic Encoding Rules (BER), Distinguished Encoding Rules (DER), Packed Encoding Rules, aligned (PER) and unaligned (UPER), and XML Encoding Rules (XER), basic and canonical.
BER is used by network switches to generate Call Data Records (CDR). Roaming CDRs are generated in TAP3 files. These Call Data Records (CDR) are then processed by billing systems.
Aligned and unaligned PER/UPER are used by 3GPP and ETSI to define protocols like RRC, NBAP, RANAP, RNSAP, SABP, S1AP, X2AP etc.
