In order to ensure the openness, peer systems must share some minimum knowledge upon the data involved in the exchange.

This includes:

- The semantics of these data values (are they integers? booleans? couples of a real and an octet string? etc...)

- The representations, or schemes in terms of streams of octets, that are used for these typed values.
